Grand Memorial of Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar at India United Mill No. 6, Mumbai  
  • The Government of Maharashtra by its Notification No. TPB-4313/CR-44/2013/UD-11 dated 19/03/2013 appointed MMRDA as the Special Planning Authority for development of Grand Memorial of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on INDU MILL land. Subsequently, the Govt. of Maharashtra by its Order No. TPB-4313/CR-44/2013/UD-11 dated 20/04/2013 issued directives for performing duties by the MMRDA to develop the Memorial of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Accordingly, Global Expression of Interest were invited to engage consultants of International repute for preparation of detailed Master Plan of the Grand Memorial by MMRDA in July 2013. The conceptual design presented by M/s. Shashi Prabhu and Associates and Design Associates Inc. was selected.

  • Subsequently, a Single Member Committee under the Chairmanship of Hon'ble Minister, Social Justice and Special Assistance was formed vide Govt. Order No. TPB4315/1197/C.N.10/2016/UD-11 dated 14/03/2016 to finalise the conceptual plan of the Grand Memorial. As per the discussions held in the meetings convened between the individuals/organisation concerned and the Single Member Committee, M/s Shashi Prabhu and Associates and Design Associates Inc have prepared revised conceptual plan of the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial. The committee submitted its report to the Government of Maharashtra. The Government of Maharashtra approved the conceptual plan submitted by Single Member Committee in April 2017 and directed MMRDA to prepare detailed plans, estimates and invite tenders for construction of the Memorial.

  • Accordingly Global tenders on ‘Design - Build basis' are invited by MMRDA on 14/4/2017 for construction of the Memorial at Indu Mill. Last date for submission of Bids was 26/10/2017 and Bids were opened on 30/10/2017. Only single bidder submitted the bid.

  • Therefore tenders were re invited with short Notice and the tenders were opened on 24/11/2017. After approval of the Executive Committee, work is awarded to M/s Shapoorji Pallonji and Co. Pvt. Ltd on 09/02/2018. Administrative approval to the amended estimate of Rs. 763.05 Cr for development of the Memorial was granted in the Authority meeting held on 12-01-2018.

  • The Indu Mill land was handed over by National Textile Corporation to the Government of Maharashtra. MMRDA has taken possession of the said land on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra on 25/3/2017.

Salient features of the memorial are :-

  • 350 feet high Bronze cladded statue, accessed by circular ramp, with dome in ‘Buddhist Architecture' style as pedestal.

  • Exhibition halls, Parikrama Path, Connected with Chaitya Bhumi.

  • Research Centre, Lecture Halls, Library, Conference Halls.

  • Meditation Centre,1000 capacity Auditorium, Landscaped area, Souvenir Shops, Waiting Room, Canteen, Administrative Office, Toilets, Parking etc.

  • Cost of construction approx. 600 Cr.

  • Period of Completion : Within 3 yrs after award of work to the Contractor.
