Grand Memorial of Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mill, Mumbai.

The State Govt. vide notification dated 19-03-2013 has appointed MMRDA as the Special Planning Authority for development of grand memorial of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on the lands of Indu Mill no. 6, admeasuring about 4.84 Ha. Subsequently, vide order dated 20-04-2013, the State Govt. has laid down tasks to be executed by MMRDA for development of Dr. Ambedkar memorial. The proposed memorial is in the public interest and a tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The Bhoomi Poojan Ceremony was held on 11th October 2015 at the hands of Hon. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi.

As per the approved concept plan, the entire site is envisaged to be ‘Shanti Sthala’ comprising of gardens depicting spirit and personality of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The Memorial consists of bronze cladded statue of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar placed on 100 feet high pedestal, housing a dome in ‘Buddhist Architecture’ style and circular ramp to access the statue. In addition, 1000 seating capacity Auditorium, Exhibition halls, Research Centre, Lecture Halls, Library, Conference Halls, Meditation Centre, Parikrama Path, Souvenir Shops, Waiting Room, Canteen, Administrative Office, Toilets, Landscaped area, Parking etc form part of memorial.

National Textile Corporation of India has handed over the Indu Mill land to the Govt. of Maharashtra in lieu of TDR. MMRDA has taken its possession on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra on 25-3-2017.The tenders were invited on ‘Design and Build’ basis for the construction of the Memorial as per the directions of the Government of Maharashtra. The work is awarded to M/s. Shapoorji Pallonji and Company on 09-02-2018 after completion of due procedure.

With respect to the government’s decision to increase the height of the Statue from 350 feet (250 feet high Statue + 100 feet Pedestal) to 450 feet (350 feet high statue + 100 feet pedestal), the revised conceptual proposal was presented before the State Cabinet Meeting held on 15th January 2020.

Government vide GR dated 9th May, 2022 has constituted a Cabinet Sub Committee under the chairmanship of Minister, Social Justice & Special Assistance for coordinating the work of the memorial.

As per the revised conceptual proposal, building permissions and other required permissions are obtained and the construction work is ongoing.
