Twin Tube Tunnel between Thane and Borivali

           Thane-Borivali Double Tunnel Project

  1. Project information

The Thane-Borivali Double Tunnel Project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) . The project includes construction of double tunnels under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and access roads connecting the Western Express Highway from Borivali and Ghodbunder Road from Thane.

  • Administrative Approval Date: 10 March 2023
  • Cost of administrative approval: ₹16,600.40 crore
  • Total project cost (including IDC charges): ₹18,838 crore
  • Work Start Date: May 19, 2023
  • Project duration: 60 months (expected completion by May 2028)

Currently, the 23 km journey between Thane and Borivali takes 1 to 1.5 hours. After the project is completed, the same journey will be completed in just 15 minutes.

  • Total Length: 11.84 Km
  • Tunnel length: 10.25 km
  • Connecting roads: 1.59 km
  • Length division:
    • Along Borivali: 5.75 km
    • Thane side: 6.09 km

Each tunnel will have 2 traffic lanes and 1 emergency lane. There will be cross-passages at every 300 meters. From a safety point of view, the following facilities will be provided:

  • Ventilation system
  • Firefighting equipment
  • Smoke detector devices
  • Retro-reflective / LED information board

  • This project is divided into 3 packages:
    • 2 Civil Packages - Ongoing
    • 1 MEP Package (Air Conditioning, Security System, etc.) - Starting Soon
  • Contractor: M/s Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited
  • Consultant: M/s. Hill–TCE Joint Venture (JV)

Since Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a sensitive area, tunnels are being dug using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in an environmentally friendly manner.
